Advance your nursing career and become a trusted advocate for the elderly with effective prep for the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP exam.
The ANCC AGACNP-BC exam, administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), is for nurses seeking to become certified Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioners. This certification validates your expertise in managing the health needs of acutely ill adult and older adult populations.
Eligibility requires completing a graduate program in adult-gerontology acute care and holding a current RN license. The program must be accredited by the CCNE or ACEN and include supervised clinical practice in acute care settings.
The AGACNP-BC exam is structured around three key subject areas: Clinical Judgment, Professional Role, and Clinical Practice. These subjects cover the full scope of acute care practice, assessing your ability to manage complex and critical conditions, perform advanced diagnostic procedures, and deliver evidence-based care to acutely ill patients.
The exam consists of 175 questions, including 150 scored and 25 unscored pretest questions, with a 3.5-hour time limit. Scores are calculated based on the number of correctly answered questions out of the 150 scored items. The ANCC uses a scaled scoring system, converting your raw score (number of correct answers) to a scaled score for consistency across exam versions. You'll receive an official score report immediately after the exam, indicating whether you passed or failed. The AGACNP-BC credential is valid for five years, and recertification is available through continuing education, clinical practice hours, or re-examination.
