The ASWB BSW (Bachelor of Social Work) exam is designed for entry-level social workers who have completed a BSW degree from an accredited program. This exam is the first step toward becoming a licensed social worker, enabling professionals to practice social work under supervision in various settings, such as schools, hospitals, and social service agencies.
The BSW exam comprises 170 multiple-choice questions, 150 of which are scored and 20 of which serve as pretest items. Candidates are given four hours to complete the exam. Eligibility to take the BSW exam requires a BSW degree from an accredited institution. Because of the adjustments needed to score different versions of the exam correctly, the ASWB cannot provide a fixed number of correct answers required to pass. Generally, pass points range from 90 to 107 correct answers out of the 150 scored questions. Once licensed, the certification generally needs renewal every two to three years, with continuing education credits required to maintain the license.
