The CBDCE Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) exam, offered by the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE), is designed for health professionals who specialize in diabetes care and education. This certification validates your expertise in helping patients manage and prevent diabetes, making it essential for roles in diabetes education programs, endocrinology practices, and community health settings.
Eligibility for the CDCES certification requires a current, active, and unrestricted license or registration in a relevant healthcare discipline (such as nursing, dietetics, or pharmacy). Candidates must also have a minimum of 2,000 hours of professional practice experience in diabetes care and education within the past four years, with at least 40% of these hours accrued in the most recent year. Additionally, at least 15 hours of continuing education activities directly related to diabetes must be completed within the past two years.
The exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions and has a time limit of 4 hours. A passing score is typically around 70%, based on a scaled scoring system. The reported pass rate in 2023 was 73%. Once certified, the CDCES credential is valid for five years, and recertification can be achieved through continuing education or re-examination.
