Advance your certification in burn nursing with effective prep for the CBRN® exam.
The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) Certified Burn Registered Nurse (CBRN®) exam is designed for nurses who specialize in burn care. The BCEN offers this certification to validate a nurse's expertise in providing care to patients with burn injuries, which is critical for roles in burn units and trauma centers.
To be eligible, you must have an active RN license and at least two years of experience in burn care nursing. There are no specific continuing education requirements for eligibility, but a strong foundation in burn care is recommended.
The CBRN® exam covers a comprehensive range of subjects essential for burn nursing. Key topics include the pathophysiology of burn injuries, such as thermal, chemical, and electrical burns, and the systemic responses that follow, including burn shock and metabolic changes. Clinical practice is a significant focus, with sections dedicated to initial management, acute care, and wound management, emphasizing resuscitation, infection control, and pain management. The exam also addresses psychosocial support, patient advocacy, and special populations like pediatric and elderly patients. Additionally, it covers professional practice, including ethics, interprofessional collaboration, and disaster management, ensuring that nurses are well-prepared for the complexities of burn care.
The CBRN® exam consists of 175 questions, 150 of which are scored and 25 unscored, with a time limit of 3 hours. The certification is valid for four years, with renewal options through continuing education or re-examination.
