The Family Nurse Practitioner - Board Certified (FNP-BC) exam, administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), is designed for nurse practitioners seeking certification in family primary care. This certification validates your skills and knowledge in providing comprehensive, evidence-based care to patients across the lifespan, from infants to older adults, in a variety of primary care settings.

To be eligible, candidates must hold a current RN license, have completed a master’s, postgraduate, or doctoral program in family nurse practitioner (FNP) studies, and fulfill the program’s clinical hour requirements. The FNP-BC exam consists of 175 questions (150 scored and 25 unscored), and candidates have 3.5 hours to complete the exam. The FNP-BC credential is valid for five years, with renewal options available through continuing education, professional development, and clinical practice requirements.
