The ASWB MSW (Master of Social Work) exam, also known as the Masters exam, is designed for those who have completed a master's degree in social work and are seeking licensure to practice social work at a professional level under supervision. This exam is essential for social workers who aim to provide services in various environments, including schools, healthcare settings, and social service agencies.
The MSW exam includes 170 multiple-choice questions, with 150 scored and 20 pretest items that are not scored. The exam duration is four hours. Because of the adjustments needed to score different versions of the exam correctly, the ASWB cannot provide a fixed number of correct answers required to pass. Generally, pass points range from 90 to 107 correct answers out of the 150 scored questions. The MSW license must generally be renewed every two to three years, requiring ongoing continuing education to maintain.
