Sharpen your expertise and build confidence in pediatric emergency nursing by earning the CPEN® certification.
Offered by the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN), the BCEN Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse (CPEN®) exam is designed for nurses specializing in pediatric emergency nursing. This certification confirms a candidate’s expertise in providing care to pediatric patients in emergency settings.
Eligibility requires a current RN license, and it is recommended that candidates have at least two years of experience in pediatric emergency nursing.
The exam is divided into several key subjects, including the triage process, which assesses a nurse's ability to prioritize care based on acuity and patient assessment, focusing on history, physical examination, and pain management. The largest portion of the exam addresses system-focused emergencies, covering respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, gastrointestinal, and other critical systems, along with the management of trauma and infections. Special considerations such as neonatal, behavioral health, and maltreatment emergencies are also included, alongside multi-system concerns like sepsis and anaphylaxis. Additionally, the exam covers professional issues in nursing practice, such as legal considerations, risk management, and patient-family interactions, ensuring that nurses are well-prepared to handle both the clinical and ethical challenges of pediatric emergency care.
The CPEN® exam consists of 175 questions, 150 of which are scored and 25 unscored, with a time limit of 3 hours. The certification is valid for four years, with renewal options through continuing education or re-examination.
