Sharpen your expertise and build confidence in trauma nursing by earning the TCRN® certification.
The BCEN TCRN® exam is for nurses seeking certification in trauma nursing. Offered by the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN), this certification validates your ability to provide advanced care to trauma patients, which is essential for roles in trauma centers and emergency departments.
Eligibility requires a current RN license, and while there are no specific experience requirements, it is recommended that candidates have at least two years of experience in trauma nursing.
The exam covers a comprehensive range of subjects essential for trauma nursing. Key areas include the clinical practice of managing head, neck, trunk, and extremity injuries, where candidates are tested on their knowledge of conditions such as traumatic brain injuries, thoracic and abdominal trauma, and burn management. The exam also focuses on special considerations in trauma care, including the psychosocial impacts of trauma, systemic inflammatory response, and care for vulnerable populations like pediatrics and geriatrics. Additionally, it addresses the continuum of care from injury prevention to rehabilitation, ensuring candidates are well-versed in every stage of trauma care. Finally, the exam covers professional issues such as trauma quality improvement, research, disaster management, and legal and ethical considerations, emphasizing the importance of a well-rounded approach to trauma nursing.
The TCRN® exam consists of 175 questions, 150 of which are scored and 25 unscored, with a time limit of 3 hours. The certification is valid for four years, with renewal options through continuing education or re-examination.
