Demonstrate your commitment to protecting worksite safety by passing the CHST exam.
The Construction Health and Safety Technician® (CHST) exam is offered by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP). It is designed for professionals who work to ensure safety in the construction industry, including safety managers, supervisors, and safety technicians. This certification is ideal for those responsible for safety and health programs on construction sites.
The CHST exam covers four main domains that evaluate a candidate's knowledge and skills necessary for maintaining safety standards in construction environments. Domain 1: Hazard and Risk Identification and Control (36.6%) assesses understanding of various hazards such as working at heights, confined spaces, electrical risks, and mechanized equipment, as well as the application of controls to mitigate these risks. Domain 2: Emergency Preparedness, Incident Investigation, and Response (19.9%) tests the candidate's ability to prepare for and manage emergencies, including creating action plans and coordinating responses. Domain 3: Safety Program Development, Implementation, and Sustainment (22.5%) focuses on developing and maintaining safety programs, inspecting worksites, and applying health, safety, and environmental standards. Domain 4: Leadership, Communication, and Training (21%) evaluates skills in leadership, communication strategies, and the ability to train and motivate workers while ensuring total worker health and safety.
Eligibility for the CHST exam requires three years of construction experience, with at least 35% of primary job duties dedicated to health and safety. The exam contains 200 multiple-choice questions, which must be completed within 5.5 hours. The certification must be renewed every five years through continuing education or retaking the exam.
