The Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI) Certified Foundational Perioperative Nurse (CFPN) exam is designed for perioperative nurses who are beginning their careers and seeking to validate their foundational knowledge in the perioperative setting. This certification recognizes your foundational expertise in perioperative nursing, making it an essential credential for nurses working in surgical units, operating rooms, and other perioperative environments.
Eligibility for the CFPN certification requires a current, active, and unrestricted RN license. Candidates must have completed a perioperative nursing education program or possess a minimum of one year of perioperative nursing experience within the past two years.
The CFPN exam covers a range of subjects designed to assess foundational knowledge and skills essential for perioperative nursing. The exam is structured around key content areas, including perioperative nursing care, which covers the entire surgical experience from preoperative assessments to postoperative care. It also includes surgical instrumentation, which addresses the proper selection, handling, and care of surgical instruments and equipment. Another critical area is sterilization and disinfection, which focuses on maintaining a sterile environment to prevent infection. Additionally, the exam tests knowledge in Safety and Emergency Situations, emphasizing the nurse's role in ensuring patient safety and effectively responding to perioperative emergencies. These subjects collectively ensure that certified nurses are well-prepared to provide competent and safe care in the perioperative setting.
The exam consists of 120 multiple-choice questions with a time limit of 2.5 hours. It uses scaled scoring from 200 to 800, and candidates must achieve a total scaled score of 620 to pass. In 2023, 159 candidates took the CFPN exam and the reported pass rate was 93%. Once certified, the CFPN credential is valid for five years, and recertification can be achieved through continuing education or re-examination.
