The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT®) administers the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) exam. This exam is designed for individuals who have completed an AEMT training program and seek to demonstrate their ability to provide advanced pre-hospital care. AEMTs are equipped to perform interventions such as intravenous therapy, advanced airway management, and medication administration.
Eligibility for the AEMT exam requires successful completion of a state-approved AEMT course. The computer-based exam consists of 135 questions and has a time limit of 2 hours and 15 minutes. The exam is adaptive, meaning the difficulty of the questions adjusts based on the candidate’s responses. To pass, candidates must meet the minimum competency in various domains, including trauma, cardiology, and medical emergencies. The certification is valid for two years, after which recertification through continuing education or a recertification exam is required.
