The ASWB Clinical (LCSW) exam evaluates the knowledge and skills needed for independent clinical social work practice. Here’s everything you need to know in 2025.

ASWB LCSW Exam Overview

The ASWB Clinical exam includes 170 multiple-choice questions. Of these, 150 are scored, and 20 are unscored pretest items. You’ll have 4 hours to complete the exam. This exam is designed for individuals with a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree and supervised clinical experience as required by their licensing board.

LCSW Content Areas

I. Human Development, Diversity, and Behavior in the Environment (24%)

  • Apply theories of individual and family development across the lifespan in clinical contexts.
  • Evaluate how trauma, abuse, neglect, loss, and oppression influence behavior and emotional functioning.
  • Understand how race, ethnicity, culture, gender identity, sexual orientation, and other identities shape client experiences.
  • Use knowledge of environmental and social systems to inform clinical assessment and intervention.

II. Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment Planning (30%)

  • Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments using interviews, standardized tools, and collateral sources.
  • Evaluate risk factors including harm to self or others, substance use, and medical or mental health comorbidities.
  • Formulate clinical diagnoses using the DSM-5-TR and differential diagnostic processes.
  • Collaborate with clients to develop individualized treatment plans that include goals, interventions, and outcome measures.

III. Psychotherapy, Clinical Interventions, and Case Management (27%)

  • Deliver evidence-informed therapeutic interventions such as CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing, and psychodynamic therapy.
  • Build therapeutic alliances and maintain engagement through empathy, cultural humility, and client-centered communication.
  • Monitor client progress, adapt interventions as needed, and provide psychoeducation and referrals when appropriate.
  • Coordinate care with other providers and systems to ensure continuity and effectiveness of services.

IV. Professional Values and Ethics (19%)

  • Demonstrate knowledge and application of the NASW Code of Ethics and state/federal regulations affecting clinical practice.
  • Recognize and resolve ethical dilemmas involving boundaries, dual relationships, informed consent, and confidentiality.
  • Engage in ethical decision-making in the context of clinical supervision, licensing, and organizational dynamics.
  • Commit to ongoing professional development, cultural competence, and anti-oppressive clinical practice.
